One of the many transitions that occurred while
moving the Journal editorial offices from Austin to
Madison was the unification of the WWW sites of the
Journal and JCE Software into JCE Online. Since that time
JCE Online has provided several valuable resources to
the chemistry education community. With the introduction
of JCE Online+ (see below), we have expanded these
resources and have plans to expand them even further.
We thought that the Journal readership might like to
know what is available to them at JCE Online. That's what
this new column will do each month.
JCE Online is divided into several areas. Each
constituent part maintains an area at JCE Online: this
Journal, JCE Software, JCE Internet, and JCE Books.
There also is an area that lists Chemical Education
Happenings and an area that contains information About JCE.
JCE Online+
JCE Online+ is a subscription-only feature of
JCE Online; only subscribers can access its resources.
These resources include the full text of the editorial content
of the Journal, articles published by JCE Internet,
articles in Open Review at JCE Internet, and most future
enhancements to JCE Online.
Journal
With the introduction of JCE Online+, the full text
of the Journal editorial content is available to Online+
subscribers. Beginning with the September 1996 issue,
the articles appear as they do in the
Journal. Most articles have an additional first page that contains the
abstract and keywords associated with the article, with links
to any supplementary online materials. For those of you
without fast, reliable Internet connections, JCE
Software also makes this resource available via CD-ROM.
Abstracts and sometimes the full text of articles
in the Journal are available online starting with the
July 1995 issue. To help you to find
Journal articles, JCE Online has a searchable online index to the entire
Journal that begins with the first issue published in 1924. Search
results are linked to the online abstract or article,
whenever the latter is available.
Increasingly, authors supply materials to
supplement their printed articles. JCE Online has these
materials (provided as received from the author) and you can
download them using links from the online abstract. Of
course, information and forms for Journal subscribers,
authors, and reviewers can be found at JCE Online.
JCE Internet
JCE Internet publishes articles, columns,
resources, and resource lists that are available only via the
Internet. Articles published by JCE Internet use the digital
medium to provide motion, sound, and interactivity that
are not possible in print. JCE Internet resources include
the Chemistry Education Resource Shelf (a list of
chemistry textbooks and their publishers with links to online
reviews) and Journals for Chemical Educators (journals
"you should be reading" with links to many of the publishers).
New at JCE Internet are one article and three
submissions that are ready for you to review. "Animated
Vibrational Modes of Triatomic Molecules" by
Giles Henderson and Christine Liberatore contains
embedded animations central to the article - a task that static
figures cannot do. In Review has two new submissions
from Scott Van Bramer ("Using Mathcad to Teach
Instrumental Techniques" and "Interpreted NMR Data"),
and one from William F. Coleman ("The Interactive Spreadsheet").
JCE Internet's Open Review allows you the
opportunity to submit a review of these papers. If you have
wanted to give input into what is published by JCE, here is
your chance. The WWW Site Review Committee has also
added several new sites to its list. If you are tired of
hit-and-miss surfing for useful information on the Internet,
starting with this list will raise your ratio of hits to misses.
Articles published by JCE Internet, submissions
in Open Review, and the list of reviewed sites are
available only to subscribers of JCE Online+. Future additions
to JCE Internet will most likely only be available to
JCE Online+ subscribers.
JCE Software
All the programs currently available from
JCE Software are described at JCE Online including hardware
and software requirements and curriculum notes.
Information and forms for ordering JCE
Software issues and for prospective authors can also be found in the Software area
of JCE Online.
New at JCE Online from JCE
Software is our Support area. In addition to providing the usual software
support information such as updates, troubleshooting
tips, and problem reports, we will also offer how-to-use
materials from users of JCE Software programs. These
materials will include classroom assignments, activities,
and presentations (see JCE Software Prospectus, p 127).

JCE Software programs points you in the right direction.
Happenings and About JCE
JCE receives many announcements of events of
interest. At Chemical Education Happenings these
events, announcements, and awards are listed. If you would
like to announce an event at JCE Online, we would be
happy to list it here. Information about what JCE publishes
and who publishes it can be found at About JCE. You can
also find contact information for the Editorial Offices,
