A Novel Multipurpose Model Set for Teaching General Chemistry

Abstract
For a long time, researchers have worked to develop precise and accurate models in research and simple models for teaching. Teaching general chemistry requires a simple and inexpensive model set capable of demonstrating all the common structures in organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry. This paper describes our endeavour to develop such a model set. The set centers around a multiple-symmetry ball having 11 holes chosen so as to give various symmetries. The 11-hole system considerably reduces the number of balls to be provided and makes the set useful for teaching general chemistry and low in cost. The model set includes specially designed connectors to provide effects such as delocalization and multiple and multicenter bonding. However, no effort has been made to make the set to scale in terms of the size of the atoms and bond lengths. A few applications of the model set describing the structure of crystalline solids, inorganic molecules, and organic molecules are demonstrated.
