At the time of publication of the original
research paper (1) there were three students who had
pending grades that led to some misleading tabulations and slight errors in the reported data. However, the interpretations and inferences of the outcomes of
the data were accurate. We regret these errors and submit the following corrections to the
published manuscript.
The first sentence of the first paragraph of the section on Findings should read:
The D, F, or W rate in general chemistry for this university is approximately 47%. The D, F, or W rate for this class was 47.7%: 14.5% (n = 35) of the 241 students withdrew from the course, 19.5% received an F, and 13.7% received a D. Three students had pending grades at the time the data were analyzed.
The second sentence of the second paragraph of the Findings section should read:
Only one person (2.9%) of the total withdrawals
had completed first-semester calculus and 34 (97.1%) of the withdrawals from the course either had no mathematics course on record or had not enrolled in calculus.
Corrected Tables 1 and 3 appear below.
Acknowledgments
We thank Don Lewis and Eric Brahinsky for their contributions to this research and for their
valuable suggestions and additions.
