Award Deadlines

WCC Overcoming Challenges Award

The Women Chemists Committee of the ACS has established an award designed to recognize a woman undergraduate from a two-year or four-year institution for her efforts in overcoming hardship to achieve success in chemistry. The award consists of a plaque, a monetary award of $250, and up to $1,000 in travel expenses to the fall ACS national meeting. The recipient will be recognized at the WCC Luncheon at that meeting.

The awardee must be a woman undergraduate currently enrolled in a two-year chemistry-related program or pursuing a major or minor in a four-year chemistry program at a school that does not grant a doctorate in chemistry; the awardee must have completed one semester of college-level chemistry.

Complete information about the criteria for the award, the submission process, and award administration may be found at the Women Chemists Committee page of the ACS Web site. Nominations, which must be received by May 1, 2002, should be sent to Women Chemists Committee, American Chemical Society, 1155 16th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036.

Alsos Digital Library for Nuclear Issues

A new source of information on nuclear topics is now accessible on the World Wide Web. The Alsos Digital Library for Nuclear Issues is a Web-based collection of annotated references to resources that offer a broad, balanced perspective on current and historical topics relating to nuclear issues. The references cover the origins, applications, and consequences of nuclear energy for a diverse audience--for students and teachers from middle school through college, as well as for the general public.

At present the library consists of approximately 350 annotations of books, articles, videos, CD-ROMs, and Web sites for a variety of disciplines ranging from physics to literature. It is expected that by the end of 2002 the Alsos Library will contain more than one thousand vetted, indexed annotations.

The library project is directed by Frank Settle (Chemistry) and Tom Whaley (Computer Science) of Washington & Lee University, Lexington, VA. It is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation and is part of NSF's National Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology Digital Library (NSDL) program. The goal of NSDL is to create, organize, and install high-quality educational resources on the Internet.

NEW, Call for Experiments

The National Educators' Workshop: Update (NEW: Update) series will offer a workshop on new and evolving topics in engineering materials, science, and technology. The workshop emphasizes gathering experiments and demonstrations for use in materials lab courses as well as a presentation of topics on emerging technology. It will be held October 13-16, 2002, at San Jose State University. Faculty from kindergarten through college are invited to participate by submitting experiments or attending the workshop. Abstracts of materials should be submitted by April 22, 2002: consult this Web site for submission instructions. For information contact Jim Jacobs, School of Technology, Norfolk State University, Norfolk, VA 23504-8060; phone: 757/823-8109; fax: 757/823-8215.

Chemistry Teacher Connection

The "Chemistry Teacher Connection" (CTC) is especially for high school chemistry teachers. For only $40/year, it offers an online-only subscription to CLIC along with membership in the Division of Chemical Education, normally $65/year. CTC subscribers receive access to all articles and supplements from 1996 through the current issue.

C&EN CLICs

Through special arrangement with the ACS, JCE High School CLIC is now able to provide subscribers with online access to Chemical & Engineering News articles that have been selected specifically for secondary science instructors and their students.

JCE Collections Available
Occasionally, collections of JCE back issues become available for donation to individual teachers, schools, or libraries. JCE matches collections with interested recipients. Recipients pay shipping costs or pick up the collection.
