Journal of Chemical Education on CD-ROM, 2005

The 2005 edition of Journal of Chemical Education on CD-ROM has been released by JCE Software and shipped to those who have placed orders. The abstract appeared in the January 2005 issue of JCE.

  • JCE CD 2005 contains the twelve issues of JCE from January to December of the year 2005, volume 82. All articles published in 2005— full text, graphics, tables—are displayed to retain their original appearance in the Journal. In addition, abstracts, supplemental materials, and color version of graphics for many articles are included. Many literature citations are linked to the online version of the cited articles. The annual index is included and you can perform searches by title, author, keyword, full-text contents or combinations of these attributes of the articles and supplements on the CD. Using industry-standard Adobe Acrobat PDF files makes articles easy to find and view, enabling you to locate, read, and print an article from your computer with a just a few clicks of the mouse.
  • To purchase JCE CD 2005 or similar CD-ROMs for 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001, or 2000, or for information about the use of these CDs by a library or Wide Area Network (WAN) including WWW, contact JCE Software or visit the JCE Online Store.

New JCE Digital Library Collection, JCE LivTexts

The JCE Digital Library now contains eight collections of digital resources for teaching and learning chemistry. The latest, JCE LivTexts: Living Textbooks for Chemistry, endeavors to collect items that cover a particular area of chemistry with much the same breadth and scope as a textbook, but includes interactivity and media to help students better explore and understand the topic. Bringing the model of JCE as the “living textbook of chemistry” to the digital realm allows extending the model with commentary, emendation, addition, supplementation, interactivity, data, simulation, and dynamic media to truly bring the presentation of the topic alive for the student.

The first entry in this collection covers the topic of quantum chemistry and is entitled Quantum States of Atoms and Molecules by David Hanson, Theresa Julia Zielinski, Erica Harvey, and Robert Sweeney. Introducing quantum mechanics as it relates to spectroscopy, the electronic structure of atoms and molecules, and molecular properties, this digital, living textbook provides opportunities for students to develop skills in information processing, critical thinking or analytical reasoning, and problem solving that are so important for success.

Go to Quantum States of Atoms and Molecules and get more information about JCE LivTexts in the JCE Digital Library (accessed Feb 2006). If you have developed similar materials and would like to have them included in the JCE LivTexts collection of the JCE Digital Library, please email us.

JCE Buyers Guide

The print edition of the JCE Buyers Guide has been mailed with this issue. The Buyers Guide, the most comprehensive listing of its kind, includes interfaced experiments, laboratory manuals, laboratory notebooks, models, reference books, and software—in addition to books.

Access to the information in the Buyers Guide is always available on JCE Online (accessed Feb 2006). The online version has the same information as print, plus more; it is searchable, linked to textbook reviews and publisher’s sites, and is kept as current as possible.

Awards Announced

2005 Mosher Award

The Santa Clara Valley Section of the American Chemical Society has announced that Michael P. Doyle of the University of Maryland is the 2005 recipient of the Harry and Carol Mosher Award. The Section established the award in 1980 to: (1) Recognize and encourage outstanding work in chemistry; (2) Advance chemistry as a profession; and (3) Recognize service to ACS. The award is named for the late Harry S. Mosher of Stanford University and Carol W. Mosher of SRI, husband and wife, charter members and long-time supporters of the Santa Clara Valley Section. Any scientist residing in the U.S. who is a member of the ACS is eligible to be nominated for the Mosher Award. Details of the award and the list of past recipients can be found online (accessed Feb 2006).
