High School Web Sites: Chemistry in Action

Back to Web Sites Category List

General Chemistry for Students

  • Contains nearly 200 Web links for students in general chemistry courses, categorized by: general resource sites, tutorial-oriented sites, tutorials by topic, questions and answers, odd stuff, the lighter side, neat stuff to know, and software. (5/2009)

Chemistry in the Modern World Laboratory: Chem 1002

  • Experiments from a chemistry course. Includes Synthesis and Properties of Soap, Synthesis of Aspirin, Visible Spectra of Soda Pops, Chemical Reactions of Black and White Photography, Determination of the Amount of Phosphate in a Detergent, and more. (5/2009)

Understanding Our Planet through Chemistry

  • This U.S. Geological Survey site shows how chemists and geologists use analytical chemistry to: determine the age of the Earth; show that an extraterrestrial body collided with the Earth; predict volcanic eruptions; observe atmospheric change over millions of years; and document damage by acid rain and pollution of the Earth's surface. (5/2009)

Chemistry Tutorial: The Chemistry of Water

  • Discusses the polarity of water, ionization of NaCl, acids and bases. (5/2009)

Pyrotechnics - The Art of Fire

  • Composed by Petri Pihko, a chemistry graduate student from Finland. In addition to his perspective on the art of fire, he includes links to other pyrotechnic literature and commercial sites. (5/2009)

The Chemistry of Sake Brewing

  • By R.W. Atkinson, Professor of Analytical and Applied Chemistry at the University of Tokyo. A detailed analysis and explanation of the process of sake brewing is provided. (5/2009)

Chemical Carousel: A Trip around the Carbon Cycle

  • Designed by high school students for Thinkquest, a contest for students ages 12 to 18. The site relates the processes of the carbon cycle while showing the interrelationship of chemistry, biology, and agriculture. It illustrates a protein cycle and a carbohydrate/fuel cycle and the travel of carbon through each. (5/2009)

The Chemiluminescence Home Page: The Internet Page that Glows

  • Contains several QuickTime movies of examples of solution phase chemiluminescence as well as hypertext sites for those interested in chemiluminescence. The site also features bibliographies for both adult and young readers. (5/2009)

Microworlds: Exploring the Structure of Materials: Science Education for Grades 9-12

  • An interactive tour of current research in the materials sciences at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's Advanced Light Source (ALS). The ALS is used by scientists to explore the properties of materials, probe the structure of atoms and molecules, study biological specimens, investigate chemical reactions, and manufacture microscopic machines. The menu contains items such as how ALS is used, a tour of the research facility, and classroom teaching modules in materials science. (5/2009)

Macrogalleria: A Cyberwonderland of Polymer Fun

  • Maintained by the Department of Polymer Science of University of Southern Mississippi, this site provides information about polymers and their uses. Sections include: Nothin' That Ain't Paint, Properties of Polymers, Optical Fibers, Polymer Expeditions, Macroplex, The Polyquarium, Demos Page, Activities Matrix, Multiphase Polymeric Materials, How Polymers Work, MacroLab, Polymer Science Learning Center, and quizzes about the Macrogalleria. Chemistry Teacher Connection

The "Chemistry Teacher Connection" (CTC) is especially for high school chemistry teachers. For only $40/year, it offers an online-only subscription to CLIC along with membership in the Division of Chemical Education, normally $65/year. CTC subscribers receive access to all articles and supplements from 1996 through the current issue.

C&EN CLICs

Through special arrangement with the ACS, JCE High School CLIC is now able to provide subscribers with online access to Chemical & Engineering News articles that have been selected specifically for secondary science instructors and their students.

JCE Collections Available
Occasionally, collections of JCE back issues become available for donation to individual teachers, schools, or libraries. JCE matches collections with interested recipients. Recipients pay shipping costs or pick up the collection.
