Writing Conceptual Questions (CQs): Modified Calculation Question
Modify an algorithmic calculation so it requires a student to give a qualitative answer; for example, a list of increasing or decreasing properties or "higher", "lower", or "no change".

Example

Original question: Acetic acid is a weak acid (Ka = 1.8 x 105). What is the hydrogen ion concentration in a 0.15 M solution of acetic acid?

Modified question: List, in order of highest concentration to lowest concentration, all of the ionic and molecular species present in a 0.1 M solution of acetic acid, a weak acid, in water.
