Overview

This collection of digitized video clips includes all of the video described in Laroche, L. H.; Wulfsberg, G.; Young, B. J. Chem. Educ. 2003, 80, 962-966. Reactions of metal chlorides with water are shown and students are asked to hypothesize about rules relating reactivity to periodic properties. Observations of reactions of metals with cold water, hot water, cold 1 M HCl, hot 1 M HCl, and Ag+(aq) together with standard reduction potentials are used by students to correlate reactivity of metals with periodic properties.

In order for the videos to be downloaded in a reasonable time, each of the two videotapes has been divided into segments that can be accessed individually. However, downloading these videos using a slow (modem) connection still will be very slow and will require patience.

Instructions and scripts for the video demonstrations, a set of quiz and exam questions, student worksheets, and honors-level student responses to the questionnaire are available as an online supplement (see Supplement link (JCE subscribers only) on abstract page).
