Frequently Asked Questions about Chemistry Comes Alive!

How many Chemistry Comes Alive! CDs are there?
Currently there are six volumes of Chemistry Comes Alive!.

How do I install a CCA! CD?
Refer to the "Read Me" file on the CD for specific instructions. On Windows computers the file should be named ReadMe.wri. On Mac OS computers, the file should be named Read Me First!

There is no "main installer" or setup program for Chemistry Comes Alive! To use a Chemistry Comes Alive! CD, all you need is QuickTime and compatible version of an Internet browser such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer. QuickTime installers are provided each CD.

Do CCA! CDs work with Windows NT, Windows 2000, etc.?
CCA! volumes should work with any operating system that supports a compatible WWW browser and QuickTime.

Because of limited resources, JCE Software is not able to provide support for Windows NT, but we have received reports from Windows NT users that they use CCA! CDs successfully. We have not tested the the CDs with Windows 2000 or Windows Me. We have not received any reports from users who have had problems due to any Windows system version.

We have tested CCA! CDs and found them to work properly with Mac OS systems up to and including System 9.1.

The video (picture) of the movie does not appear. What should I do?
If the QuickTime window opens, and the audio (sound) plays, but no video is displayed, the problem is most likely an incompatible version of QuickTime. JCE Software recommends that you use QuickTime 4, which is compatible with all CCA! volumes. You can download a copy of the current version of QuickTime from Apple Computer.

1st editions of CCA! Volumes 1 and 2 are not compatible with QuickTime 3 for Windows. Video will be displayed properly by QuickTime 4 for Windows and by all QuickTime versions for Mac OS numbered 2.5 or higher.

2nd editions of CCA! Volumes 1 and 2, along with Volumes 3, 4, and 5 require QuickTime 3 or later. QuickTime 4 is recommended. Video will not display with older versions (QuickTime 2.x).

Can I make the movies bigger?
Unlike still images, which when clicked display a larger version of the image, movie size cannot be changed from within the browser. The movies can, however, be expanded up to full screen size when viewed in the QuickTime Player. Use the information under the movie in the browser window to locate a movie of interest on the CD. Double-click its icon to open the movie in QuickTime Player. Select the Double Size or Fill Screen option from the Movie menu to enlarge the movie.

Can I use the movies and still images in my classroom presentations?
Yes! You are free to use the movies and still images in your classroom presentations. However, you may not distribute presentations or place them on a computer network without purchasing a network license.

Can I use the movies and still images on my Web site?
CCA! Volumes are Web-Ready, but in order to use them or any images or movies from them on your web site you must purchase a license. Cost is determined by the amount of material you wish to place on line and the number of students who will be able to access it. Licenses must be renewed annually.

Why are some movies on more than one CD?
Many of the movies in the Chemistry Comes Alive! collection can be used to demonstrate more than one topic or idea. In order for instructors to find all movies that might be appropriate for use in any given class session, lecture, or presentation on a single CD, some movies must be included on more than one CD.

I am not able to insert QuickTime movies from the Chemistry Comes Alive series into my PowerPoint 2000 presentations. I get an error message that the movies are not of a standard type. I know of other people who use these movies in PowerPoint. What's wrong?
The video compression format (Sorensen) used in CCA! is incompatible with the Microsoft Media Control Interface.

For more information about the compatibility problem, see Article ID: Q235950 on Microsoft's support site.

Microsoft suggests two workarounds:

1. Access the movie via a hyperlink so that the movie opens and plays in the QuickTime MoviePlayer

2. Convert the movie to a compatible format using QuickTime Pro (not the free version ). See http://www.apple.com/quicktime/ for information about QuickTime Pro.
