Abstract
The past advances within the area of ion selective electrodes are reviewed against the historical background of potentiometric measurements that originated one hundred years ago by the pioneering work of Nernst. Within that period two important areas of activity took place: in the twenties and thirties the development within the area of pH measurement and in the sixties and seventies the renaissance of direct potentiometry with novel devices–ion selective electrodes. This work reviews the important advances, pioneers in the field and the intriguing interplay between academics and industry. (66 references and 4 figures).
