CACT Summer Conference

The 1997 California Association of Chemistry Teachers Summer Conference will be held at Crown College, University of California-Santa Cruz, on August 3-7, 1997. The topic of this year's conference, Oxygen Chemistry, encompasses many research fields, including toxicology, biochemistry, physical chemistry, earth and marine sciences, and environmental chemistryall connected through the chemistry of oxygen.

There will be a series of lectures on oxygen chemistry by Don Sawyer (Texas A & M University) and Alex Sevanian (School of Molecular Pharmacology & Toxicology, University of Southern California); Stanley Sander (Jet Propulsion Laboratory and UCLA) will present topics from his course on mid-atmospheric chemistry and his research on ozone. Other planned activities are a lecture on the origins of oxygen on earth, a CACT summer party, a winery tour, and a session titled "Success Stories: Chemistry Activities That Teach". For more information about costs, housing, units of college credit, etc., contact Juliette Bryson at 408/446-1952.

Summer Course in Oxford

"Cannons, Curios, and the Cosmos: The Scientific Revolution" will be given at Oxford University, Oxford, England from July 26 through August 16, 1997. Lectures assume no special technical or historical background. Classes, meals, and lodging will all be in Manchester College of Oxford University. The full program fee, $2858 for nonresidents of Pennsylvania, includes round-trip airfare from Philadelphia, lodging and most meals, and tuition. Completing a paper on return from England can earn credit through West Chester University. Those interested should contact:

Laboratory Safety Workshop

The Laboratory Safety Workshop (LSW) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to make health and safety an integral and important port of science education, work, and life. The organization provides training, publications, and audiovisual materials, and responds to requests for information. LSW has announced several training programs during 1997:

  • June 23-26, San Marcos, TX: 17th National Lab Safety Training Conference for Secondary Schools
  • July 14, San Diego, CA: One-day seminar at LS&EM '97
  • July 30-August 2, Florence, SC: 8th National Lab Safety Training Conference for Colleges and Universities
  • August 4, ChemEd '97: Minneapolis, MN
  • September 6, American Chemical Society/American Institute of Chemists Meeting: Las Vegas, NV

LSW has also produced two lab safety training audiovisuals: The One-Day Lab Safety Audio Course (5.5 hours) and The Two-Day Lab Safety Video Short Course (eight 90-minute VHS cassettes). The organization's two newsletters are Speaking of Safety and Safety is Elementary. For more information about LSLW, contact:
