Abstract
A new explanation of the "abnormal" decomposition potentials (ed) of aqueous solutions of halogen acids (hydrochloric, hydrobromic, and hydriodic acids) is proposed in this paper. It is suggested that the disproportionation reactions of these halogen acids in aqueous solutions are responsible for their abnormal decomposition potentials and that textbooks should use sulfuric acid as an example to explain the concept of ed.

A paper by C. G. Zoski and A. J. Bard in our April 2000 issue addresses the above.
