Award Deadlines

James Flack Norris Award: Call for Nominations

The Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society is accepting nominations for the 2001 James Flack Norris Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Teaching of Chemistry. The Norris Award, one of the oldest awards given by a Section of the American Chemical Society, is presented annually; it consists of a certificate and an honorarium of $3,000. Nominees must have served with special distinction as teachers of chemistry at any level: secondary school, college, or graduate school. Since 1951, awardees have included eminent and less widely known but equally effective teachers at all levels. The awardee for 2000 was Billy Joe Evans of the University of Michigan.

Nominations for 2001 will be accepted until April 15, 2001. The nominating material is limited to 30 pages and must focus on the nominee's contribution to and effectiveness in teaching chemistry, as distinguished from research. These qualities are demonstrated by a condensed curriculum vitae as a portion of a nominating letter, which, in turn, is supported by as many seconding letters as are necessary to convey the nominee's qualification for the award. These may show how the nominee's teaching inspires colleagues and students toward an active life in chemistry or related sciences, or may attest to the influence of the nominee's other activities in chemical education, such as textbooks, journal articles, or other professional activity at the national level. Materials should be of 8-1/2 x 11-in. size and should not include books or reprints.

Questions should be addressed to Patricia L. Samuel, chair of the Norris Award Committee: graycote@acadia.net. Nomination materials should be sent, before April 15, 2001, to Marilou Cashman, 23 Cottage Street, Natick, MA 01760; mcash0953@aol.com.

National Chemistry Week 2001

November 4-10, 2001--Celebrating Chemistry and Art

JCE to Celebrate National Chemistry Week

The Journal will join in the celebrations of National Chemistry Week again this year. Chemistry and art will be one of the themes of the October 2001 issue, and JCE editorial staff have already begun assembling materials. Our plans for the issue include an illustrated Resource Paper, a Classroom Activity, collected regular articles that relate to the theme, and specially written brief articles illustrated in color--all on the NCW theme of chemistry and art.

This material will appear early--in the October issue--so that you have plenty of time to implement it.

National Chemistry Week 2001, ACSH

Join members of the American Chemical Society as they share activities with their communities that demonstrate the importance of chemistry in our everyday lives. This year the focus will be on the role chemistry plays in the creation of works of visual art.

To find out what is happening in your area or for help in planning events for your school, contact the ACS Office of Community Activities 800/227-5558 ext. 6097 or visit the ACS Website.

Come celebrate with us!

Check JCE Announcements regularly for updated NCW plans.
