JCE Classroom Activities: Care To Contribute?
With the addition of the May 2005 JCE Classroom Activity, the number of published Activities has grown to 72. Like to help us hit 100?
The editors of this popular feature are always on the lookout for new additions to the series. Summer provides the perfect opportunity for teachers to look back over last year’s curriculum and find an experiment or activity that would fit the Classroom Activity format. Activities are especially needed to correspond with the theme for National Chemistry Week (The Home—It’s All Built on Chemistry in 2006) and for Earth Day (Dig It! in 2006).
See here for guidance about submitting a Classroom Activity or an idea for an Activity, or email any questions to Erica Jacobsen.
You will not find a Classroom Activity in this issue because of the annual summer break. Activities will resume in the September 2005 issue.
Plan Ahead for National Chemistry Week
National Chemistry Week (NCW) celebrations take place this year October 16–22 around the theme of The Joy of Toys!, which will also be one of the themes of our October issue. Since this issue will be released in early September, there will be time for incorporation of the JCE materials into your NCW plans. The staff has begun assembling theme-based materials. Here is a preview of what we are planning:-
Another useful, popular, illustrated Resource Paper that describes previously published JCE articles on this topic
- A Classroom Activity related to toys
- Collected articles that relate to the theme
- Specially written brief articles illustrated in color and related to the theme: a Report by Jerry and Mickey Sarquis on toys; a From Past Issues feature column on the topic of balloons; CLIPs, Chemical Laboratory Information Profiles; a Report from Nature; and a Research Advances feature column.
You or your ACS Local Section may obtain extra copies of the October 2005 issue—as
well as other JCE materials—for use in NCW workshops and celebrations.
To do so get in touch with JCE:
by phone at 608/262-5153 or 800-991-5534; fax at 608/265-8094.

National Research Council Awards
Postdoctoral Research Awards and Senior Research Awards are offered by the National Research Council of the U.S. National Academies. There are opportunities for independent research in U.S. government laboratories in these areas: biochemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, geochemistry, atmospheric chemistry, polymer chemistry, and related disciplines. The participating laboratories include: Naval Research Laboratory, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Air Force Research Laboratory, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Geological Survey, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Army Research Laboratory, U.S. Army Research Office, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (including the NASA Ames Research Center, NASA Astrobiology Institute, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and Goddard Space Flight Center), U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (including Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases).
Awards are for one year with the possibility of renewal; a Ph.D. or equivalent research doctorate is required. Deadlines are February 1, May 1, August 1, and November 1. Detailed information and instructions for applying are available (accessed Apr 2005).
Mettler Food Science Analysis Grants
Mettler Toledo has announced a new food science analysis education grant program,
to be awarded for the first time at the 2005 annual meeting of the Institute
of Food Technologists. The grant package, estimated to be worth an excess of
$60,000, consists of analytical equipment and accessories, balances, software,
and a personal computer, to establish or enhance the education in current and
future collegiate food science programs. Additional

Courses, Seminars, Meetings, Opportunities
POGIL Summer Workshops
Process oriented guided inquiry learning in the classroom and laboratory (POGIL) is a newly funded NSF project that focuses on the national dissemination of POGIL methods and materials. Teachers of chemistry may take part in the project in one of these ways:
- Attending 1–3 day regional or national workshops
- Using tested, commercially available POGIL materials in classroom, laboratory, or recitation (general, organic, and physical chemistry materials are now available)
- Applying for an on-site consultation to help adapt POGIL to your institutional setting
- Receiving support to visit a site currently implementing a POGIL approach
Information about the POGIL Project, workshop
descriptions, and schedules (including
online application forms) are available (accessed Apr 2005). Or contact the POGIL
Project with any questions or comments.
20th Annual National Educators’ Workshop
The 20th annual National Educators’ Workshop (NEW: Update 2005) will be held October 16–19, 2005, at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, MD. The workshop theme is Nano/Bio Science and Technology Education for the 21st Century.
The workshop program consists of plenary talks; small-group workshops; observing, evaluation, and obtaining classroom demonstrations and lab experiments; and interacting with fellow educators and industrial specialists.
