| Incorporating Chemistry Comes Alive! into Presentations |
| Using Chemistry Comes Alive! imagery in presentation software can enliven your presentations with high-quality pictures and video. Here we will focus on using Microsoft PowerPoint. Incorporating CCA! into PowerPoint can be done in several ways, each with advantages and disadvantages. Some of the methods you can incorporate CCA! video into PowerPoint are described below.
Note: The methods described below refer to PowerPoint 2000 on Windows 2000 and PowerPoint 97 on Windows 95. Other versions of PowerPoint and Windows should be similar.
|
| Drag-and-Drop |
| We think the easiest way to insert a CCA! video clip into a PowerPoint presentation is by using drag-and-drop. Simply drag the video file or picture file from Windows Explorer onto your PowerPoint slide. To accomplish this, position the windows on your desktop so that both the window containing your PowerPoint slide and the window in Explorer containing the movie or picture file are visible. Click the file icon in the Explorer window, drag it onto the content area of the slide in the PowerPoint window, and once the video or picture is positioned where you want it release the mouse button.
You now have an object that can be edited using the Windows Object Packager as described below.
|
| Using Windows Object Packager to Change Appearance |
|
Once you have created or inserted a video or picture object, you may edit it using the Windows Object Packager. We will do so now to replace the movie icon with a picture of the start of the video. In PowerPoint, right-click the movie icon. PowerPoint 2000 displays a menu with an item or submenu named Package Object that contains an Activate Contents item and Edit Package item; PowerPoint 97 has the Activate Contents and Edit Package items directly in the pop-up menu. Choose Activate Contents. The video should open in the QuickTime Player application. In QuickTime Player, choose copy from the Edit menu to place a picture of the movie on the Windows clipboard. Go back to PowerPoint and again right-click the movie icon and but this time choose Edit Package from the pop-up menu to activate the the Windows Object Packager. Click on the pane that contains the movie icon picture and choose paste from the Edit menu. Now select Update from the File menu and close the Object Packager application. You should now see the picture on your PowerPoint slide.

| Inserting CCA! Video Files as Object From File |
| To insert a CCA! video clip as an Object from a file, choose Object... from the Insert menu. In the Insert Object dialog, select Create from file and enter the file name or browse to the file using the Browse... button. Click OK. The object will appear in the PowerPoint window.
Once you have inserted the object, you may edit it using the Windows Object Packager (see above).
You may also want to choose an Action Setting for the movie. so that when you click on the picture from the movie, the video is loaded into QuickTime Player. Again, right-click the movie object choosing Action Settings... from the pop-up menu. In the Mouse Click pane select Object Action and Activate Contents. Now when in Slide Show mode, clicking the picture from the movie on the slide will play the movie in QuickTime Player.

| Inserting CCA! Video Files as New Object, Media or Video Clip |
| To insert CCA! video as a Movie or as a Media Clip or Video Clip object requires the QuickTime file to be transformed. Once transformed to an AVI file the video can be inserted so that it plays within PowerPoint and not in the QuickTime Player. First, you must transform the CCA! video file into an AVI file. See Transforming CCA! Video to .AVI.
Once you have made the CCA! video into an AVI file, go to PowerPoint and choose Movie and Sounds > Movie from File... from the Insert menu. Navigate to the AVI file you created, select it and click OK.
|
| Inserting CCA! Video Files as New Object, Package |
| You can insert a CCA! video into PowerPoint by creating a new object. This is very similar to inserting as an Object From File except that you Import the file into the Object Packager.
Choose Object... from the Insert menu. In the Insert Object dialog, select Create new. The Object Packager will open. Select Import from the File menu, select the CCA! video file and click OK. You can now proceed as above to use the Object Packager to modify the appearance.
|
| Inserting CCA! Video Files as Hyperlink |
| You can create a hyperlink to a CCA! video file. Doing so, plays the video in the QuickTime Player application.
Select an object or some text in PowerPoint. Choose Hyperlink... from the Insert menu. Use the Browse... button in the Link to file or URL area to select a CCA! video file.

| Macro Warnings and Security Levels |
| Inserting a QuickTime movie as described above is implemented using a macro. Due to the vulnerability of macros to viruses, PowerPoint may display a warning. To turn off this warning you must set the security level to its lowest setting. In PowerPoint 2000, the security level setting is found in the Tools-Macros-Security menu. In PowerPoint 97, this setting is controlled with a check box in the General tab of the Tools-Options... dialog.
